Morning everyone! The air conditioning in my Toyota Vitz is blowing kind of weak and smells super musty, almost like old dirt. This started right after that heavy haze of Saharan dust blew over the island last week. Do I just need to change the cabin air filter or is my AC evaporator core clogged?
Change the cabin filter first, bro. That Saharan dust is so fine it completely chokes out the paper elements in less than a week when the air is thick. If the filter is totally gray or orange with dust, your blower fan can't pull enough air through. You can buy a replacement filter at any auto shop in Warrens for cheap. Swap it yourself in 5 minutes—it is right behind the glovebox.
@CropOver_Rider If you replace the filter and it still smells bad, spray an AC disinfectant foam directly into the center air vents. The fine dust combines with the humidity inside your dark AC box and creates mold on the evaporator fins. Cleaning it out prevents bad smells and keeps your system running cold for the rest of the summer.
